Flow
Deciding on a track-list is rather like being given all the possible combination of character traits for a new-born child and being able to choose the outcome. Well, sort of.
It seems to me that in recent years records have increasingly veered away from the tradition format of coherency; that is to say that the album, whilst it is technically regarded as a piece of art, may not entirely feel like a unified whole.
When I listen to the Beatles’ ‘Abbey Road’ or Vox One’s ‘Pure Imagination’ (a recent addition, I might add) there is a discernible link between the songs. That being said I don’t mean to say that all albums these days don’t connect, but to my ears they don’t have the same flow. Granted, I still enjoy listening to Sarah McLachlan’s ‘Afterglow’ on full run, but more recently albums aren’t created for that continuity, at least in the mainstream.
Digital singles and individual tracks mark the landscape, marking a real change in modern musical topography.
This is something I am bearing in mind now. I need to choose a select few songs that I feel can stand together well, represent where I am as an artist, and give the best to the listeners.
